20 iconic movie creatures… not?
On Yahoo!’s front page today, there is a collection of “the good, the bad, and the creepiest monsters in film.” Being a fan of extraterrestrials, ghouls, and monsters myself I decided to take a look.

Click here to see it yourself.
On this list of 20 iconic movie creatures in no particular order is included:
1. Asterious the Minotaur (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian)
2. Kreacher (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
3. Smeagol/Gollum (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)
4. Godzilla (the original ‘Tokyo-trashing’ one)
5. “an extremely foul-tempered extraterrestrial” (Alien)
6. Jabba the Hutt (Return of the Jedi)
7. Pale Man, the one with the eyes (Pan’s Labyrinth)
8. Davy Jones (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest)
9. “the last two gelfings in existence” (The Dark Crystal)
10. King Kong (the original giant ape)
11. [baby] Loch Ness monster (The Waterhorse: Legend of the Deep)
12. “Angry skeleton hordes” (Jason and the Argonauts)
13. Creature in Han River (The Host)
14. Abe Sapien (Hellboy)
15. E. T. (E.T. the Extra Terrestrial)
16. Hogsqueal (The Spiderwick Chronicles)
17. Medusa (Clash of the Titans)
18. Lord of Darkness (Legend)
19. Saphria (Eragon)
20. Flying Monkeys (The Wizard of Oz)
Now that you’ve had a chance to skim over that list… is anyone else disappointed? Mostly all of the creatures on that list are very cool looking, but iconic? Okay… E.T. and Jabba are givens. Don’t get me wrong, I do agree with some of these… but the Loch Ness monster from the Waterhorse? I mean… he is a cute little creature, but I didn’t even get to see the movie in theatres! How on earth did he become iconic? Some of these other creatures are iconic from the stories that they come from, their books. But I have to disagree with them being iconic in the films. For example, Asterious the Minotaur… I fail to see how he was iconic in any way.
These are the creatures from Yahoo!’s list that I find iconic:
King kong, E.T., Jabba, Pan’s Labyrinth man, Gollum, Godzilla, Davy Jones, and the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz. And I’m going 50/50 with Kreacher being iconic, as much as I love him in the books… I don’t think he’s cut out for the list, we’ll see as the HP franchise continues to roll in.
Basically, I want to know what creatures YOU find iconic. And when I say iconic I really mean it…

I agree. I was disappointed when I saw that list too. They just picked some really random creatures that definitely weren’t iconic.
Yeah, Yahoo has been publishing a series of very lame lists recently. But as to Iconic creatures, maybe…
Yoda
Jaws (The shark, not the James Bond character)
Frankenstein’s monster
Dracula
The generic unicorn
Santa Claus?
Popular superheroes?
Cher?
Can they be cartoons? —
Mickey Mouse
Bugs Bunny
Bambi
Can they be real species? –
Cheetah
Lassie
Flipper
Hockey mask Jason
Burned face Freddie Krueger
Do they have to be in movies? –
Bigfoot
Charlie the Tuna
Cupid
Could they be robots? –
Robby the Robot
The Lost in Space Robot (Danger Will Robinson!)
I definitely agree with Jaws and Yoda. Maybe even the ewoks from Star Wars as well. It says “monsters” so that kind of rules out easy picks like; Benji, and The Brave Little Toaster. I’d say only about ten of their 20 are REALLY “iconic”… and none of them include Harry Potter characters, as they’re WAY to new to be “iconic”.
This is going way indie and weird…but what about that “baby/monster/thing” from David Lynch’s ERASERHEAD…or the monster rabbit from DONNIE DARKO?
Im sorry, but in at least one aspect to me, you are dead wrong. For some reason i have never FELt a more iconic character than Asterious the Minotaur. He stood out so much to me in that movie for his act of sacrifice, that Prince caspian became one of the greatest movies of all time for me. Maybe it was becuase he gave redemption to his race for past mistakes, but for what ever reason, he will forever be iconic, at the very least, to me.
